Hermes
Mischievous Hermes was the messenger god of the Greeks and was known to the Romans as Mercury. He wore winged sandals, called talaria, which made him fleet of foot, and carried a staff or caduceus entwined with two serpents. Hermes guided travellers, whether they were gods or mortals, and was the guardian of transitions and crossroads. One of his most important roles was as a psychopomp or ‘conductor of souls’, as he escorted souls to Hades and sometimes, as in the case of Persephone, away from Hades and back to the world of the living.
